Upgrading our Content with Gear

Updated: Jun 13, 2021

01 Canon M6 Mark 2

The biggest upgrade to our vlogging adventure was the purchasing of our Canon M6 Mark 2. This mirrorless 32.5 megapixel 4K camera really increased our quality and created a more professional look to our vlogs. No matter how bad the light is, we can now produce quality content . The amazing auto focus feature also provides a tool that we can use in many artistic ways. The flip up screen also allows us to create some of your favorite selfie vlogs.

One of the main reasons we decided to buy a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses, is that when we are ready to level up our content, we can invest in better lenses and use the same body. With this body only weighing 408 grams, it is the perfect camera for us to take with on our travels and adventures.

02 Boya By-MM1 Compact Shotgun Microphone

In order to capture the moments with decent audio, we decided to buy a Boya Shotgun Microphone. We settled on a budget microphone that does not require an external battery. This microphone eliminates the outside noise and concentrates the recording on where the camera is pointed. Our microphone also came with a fur cover, also known as a "dead cat", which has been a life saver when filming in any sort of windy conditions. We really believe that audio is very important when filming our vlogs.

03 Acer Predator Helios Gaming Laptop

In the beginning of our vlogging adventure we edited our first videos on our old laptops with free software. This was when we quickly discovered that in order to run any decent editing software you would need a beast of a computer. Our patience was running out with the click and wait process. It got so bad that we would click on "add title", and then go make coffee and once we were back at the computer we would still have to watch a few seconds of that dreaded hour glass.

With our frustrations escalating, we decided to do our research and invest in the best computer that our budget would allow. The next question was Desktop or Laptop? With our plans to travel a lot more in the coming years, we decided to focus on the laptop market, allowing us to edit on the move.

After extensive research, we first bought an ASUS Tuf Gaming laptop, which unfortunately gave up on us within the first 6 months. This just added to our frustrations and stress. Our second attempt was to purchase the Acer Predator Helios Gaming Laptop, which has really been a blessing to our edits. With the addition of a good graphics card, it has performed well with all our recent edits.

"01, 02, and 03 is all you need to create good vlogging content, however if you want to LEVEL UP, then consider getting 04 and 05"

04 DJI Mavic Mini

Drones have been one of the quickest growing additions to vlogging adventures. As we are vlogging on a a budget, we saved up and bought the Mavic Mini. We wanted something that will create good quality videos, but also something that we wouldn't have to sell our cars to buy. The Mavic Mini cost us around R10 000.00 ZAR, which still requires some saving, but won't cost as much as your car. The drone has been a game changer for our scenic content. From beautiful views of the ocean to the peaks of the mountains, we always take our Mini with on the adventure. This purchase has taken our content to new heights.

05 GoPro Hero 5

Our GoPro has been so useful when it comes to content in pools, oceans, boats and anything extreme. With some outdoor activities, you want to leave your fragile expensive equipment at home. This is exactly what we have done on many occasions. We will put our GoPro in our pocket and jump into the adventure.

With 4K capabilities, the footage on the GoPro is amazing and we have captured many memories turned into very good content. The only issue we have faced, is the poor sound quality. Our GoPro Hero 5 is perfect for those extreme underwater scenic shots, however we would not recommend using it as your main vlogging camera.

"Our gear Wishlist comprises of some new lenses and a gimbal for our Canon M6 Mark 2"

With vlogging on a budget we have cut costs and used our savings to invest in the gear we have today. We are excited to level up further in the coming years and create really good content for viewers and subscribers.
